What is the climate debt owed to Africa, and why does it matter?
October 23, 2023
On World Climate Action Day we highlight why addressing climate debt can boost African development and help the world meet Paris Agreement targets as we launch our climate feature.

Meeting global targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and controlling the impact of the climate crisis is an existential issue for our times. But so is raising standards of living and, by extension, energy use across Africa and the Global South. It is possible to achieve both goals, especially if the world takes action on the issue of “climate debt”. What better time to highlight these complex issues than World Climate Action Day.

Together with OpenUp, Africa Data Hub investigates these issues in "Unsettled Debt: Africa, the Climate Crisis and You," an immersive and interactive feature shedding light on the pressing issue of climate debt justice. This feature aims to amplify global understanding of the ethical and financial debt owed by the Global North to the Global South in the face of the intensifying climate crisis, and the solutions proposed by activists at conferences such as COP28..

There is a significant role played by African nations, which produce the lowest amount of greenhouse gases, in combating environmental challenges arising from consumption patterns in the Global North. The feature emphasises the adverse impact of historical resource exploitation and unsustainable levels of debt in Africa, hindering internal development and the introduction of climate friendly power sources.

This work, driven and created by Open Up, educates and empowers readers to grasp the intricate dynamics of climate debt and its global repercussions. The objective is to stimulate a global conversation on the urgent need for equitable and sustainable financing for climate solutions for Africa.

"Unsettled Debt: Africa, the Climate Crisis and You" emphasises the critical link between climate justice, debt justice and economic disparity. It serves as a clarion call for individuals, organisations, and policymakers worldwide to actively engage in fostering sustainable practices and ensuring the equitable distribution of resources.

Through collaboration with journalists, activists and other stakeholders, OpenUp has crafted a comprehensive narrative addressing the crucial intersection of climate debt, sustainable development, and global economic equity.
